KATRINE HILDEBRANDT-HUSSEY

Katrine Hildebrandt-Hussey (b. 1982) is a mixed media visual artist based in the Catskills whose work is inspired by sacred geometry and the metaphysical mapping of space and time. Using volatile processes like burning paper, the artist creates layered, geometric work. She primarily explores patterns, and meditates on the correlation between chaos and order, permanence and transience, and the interconnectivity of the universe. She earned her BFA at Hartwick College and her MFA in Sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art & Design.

Statement:

My art-making process follows a distinct path from background to foreground, using layered approaches that vary with each piece. Sometimes I begin by foraging for natural materials to create dyes, saturating the paper with colors derived from my environment. Other times, I start with a pencil sketch, then burn the lines into the paper to make them permanent. As I work, I balance methodical planning with intuition, allowing each material and piece to guide my choices. Every step is intentional and carefully considered. I pay close attention to my surroundings, working seasonally and keeping notes on when and where I gather materials. Time itself becomes a material: a brief dip in dye brings softness and suggestion, while full immersion yields density and variation—a memory held in pigment. Through this process, my work explores interconnectivity and the quiet force that encourages us all to bloom, open, and become more fully aware of ourselves and each other.
